Baking soda is one of those household ingredients that most of us have in our pantries, and we use it mostly for cooking or cleaning. However, you may not know that baking soda has many properties that make it one of the best things you can use to improve your oral health.

Surprisingly, or not, baking soda is an excellent product to use for a variety of reasons, and it can help with some oral health problems.

Why is Baking Soda Good for Your Teeth?

Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is not abrasive, which makes it one of the best products for protecting and cleaning your teeth. Some of the benefits of using baking soda to improve your oral health are:

  • Improves pH balance – the acidity in your mouth can put you at a higher the risk for tooth decay.
  • Reduces bacteria – research shows that baking soda is antimicrobial and can help reduce the occurrence of periodontal disease.
  • Helps to whiten teeth – according to researchers, toothpaste that contains baking soda is more effective than those that don’t in removing stains from teeth.
  • Improves gingival health – researchers saw some signs that using baking soda can reduce inflammation because of its antibacterial properties.

Because of its low abrasiveness, the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) believes that toothpaste that contains baking soda is safe to use and especially suited for oral hygiene. Researchers also found that this product’s antibacterial properties make it ideal in helping with oral conditions like gingivitis. Moreover, toothpaste that includes baking soda is better at whitening teeth than those that don’t.

We do not recommend using baking soda instead of toothpaste because it doesn’t contain, fluoride, which is essential for your oral health. The best thing you can do is find a toothpaste that contains baking soda. Let us know if you have any other questions about how baking soda can improve your oral health.
